Wake Forest University is a nonprofit, private, independent coeducational research university in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, founded in 1834. The university was initially located in Wake Forest, just north of Raleigh in North Carolina. Wake Forest was founded after the Norht Carolina Baptist State Convention purchased a 600-acre plantation from Dr. Calvin Jones in Wake County, Raleigh. The university lost a large number of students and faculty to service in the Civil War, and in 1862 the school closed. In 1866, the college re-opened and began to prosper more and more over the next four decades by establishing a law school and school of medicine.
